A Brief History – The concept of forming a true international body of poultry industries from many countries was suggested by Tage Lysgaard on 10 September 1976 at a World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) meeting in Malta. Lysgaard of Denmark, who was serving as director general of a.v.e.c., the European Poultry Association, and Jim Sumner, president of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, began to discuss the idea in earnest in 1997.
Finally, on 7 October 2005, a core group of industry association executives convened in Cologne, Germany, to draft the by-laws and mission statement of the newly formed International Poultry Council. Founding members included Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, the EU, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey, and the U.S.
In January 2006, a small group of members and potential members met again in Atlanta during the International Poultry Exposition to discuss how to move the IPC forward. Those meeting in Atlanta included Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, the EU, Mexico, Russia, Thailand and the United States.
